<< back HELSINKI AND STOCKHOLM

Where mountains, lakes, rivers, glaciers, fjords, forests, and heath paint magical panoramas, where art triumphs in avant-garde museums with innovative exhibitions, and the twilight illuminates everything in an unforgettable dreamlike atmosphere.

Day 1
Scheduled flight to Helsinki and transfer by private coach to the city centre, through the lush Vanha Kirkkopuisto Park with its lovely Old Church. Visit to the Sinebrychoff Art Museum, located in an old brewery building and home to the most important Finnish collection of Italian, Dutch, and Flemish artworks. Return to the city and check-in at a downtown hotel.

Day 2
The tour of Helsinki continues with departure from the "official" city centre: Senaatintori (Senator Square). This Square boasts the majestic, white Tuomiokirkko (Lutheran cathedral), with its blue dome, in surprisingly Spartan interior, and enormous pipe organ, and the University with its sumptuous library. Continuing on for Kauppatori (the market square), surrounded by lovely buildings, crafts stands, and food kiosks. Just a few steps away is the symbol of Helsinki and all of Finland: the lovely Havis Amanda fountain with its mermaid statue. Beyond the Kauppatori lies the Presidential Palace, guarded by sentinels in brightly coloured uniforms. Finally we visit the National Museum (Atheneum), with Finnish masterpieces (1700s - 1900s) and an interesting section of European art (Rodin, Cezanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin...).

Day 3
Continuation of the tour of Helsinki : excursion in private coach to enjoy the enchanting scenery of the coast road as far as Hietaniemi - the most popular beach of the city, then on to the Finlandia talo, the spectacular concert hall designed by the great Alvar Aalto according to the principles of organic rationalism. Visit to the Temppeliaukio Church, beautifully sculpted into the rock. Walk in the Kaivopuisto Park, a Finnish favourite and once a luxurious spa centre overlooking the sea. Visit to the unique Orthodox Cathedral of Uspenski, perched high over the port, a symbol of the city in a Slav-Byzantine style, with a bulb-shaped dome and a wealth of icons.
Walk on the Katajanokka isle, with its typically narrow streets lined with lovely Art Nouveau residences. In the late afternoon we board the Viking Line boat. Assignment of reserved cabins and departure for Stockholm with a stunning nocturnal cruise embellished by enchanting Baltic scenery.

Day 4
Breakfast on board. At 9:30, arrival at the port of Stockholm , disembarkation and departure by private coach to see the wonders of "Venice of the north", "the green city on water", with its truly unique charm, beginning with the isle of Djurgården, a traditional royal hunting reserve and today a lush natural park where the Vasamuseet was created to host the enormous, restored battleship "Vasa" (beginning of the 17 th century). On to Kungliga Slottet , a grandiose royal residence in Neo-Romanesque style, where there is the picturesque Changing of the Guard at 12 noon. After lunch, we check in at a charming hotel located in the historc centre.
Visit to the Gamla Stan, leaving from Slottbacken , with lovely buildings and a majestic 13 th -century cathedral - Storkyrkan . In the medieval square of Stortorget there are porticos embellished with sculptures and vaulted cellars. While the narrow streets with their picturesque houses seem fitted like a jig-saw puzzle open onto charming squares, leading to the Österlångatan, brimming with 18 th -century homes and lovely details in wrought iron. The Västerlånggatan is the most commercial and crowded street of the historic district, where we will find the German church of Tyska Kirkan, representative of Germany's influence, with its royal gallery and ebony and alabaster pulpit, the only one like it in Sweden. Then on to the Riddarholmskyrkan church, final resting place of the royal family, with its lattice girders, to the 19 th -century Riddarhuset (Home of Nobility), one of the most beautiful buildings in Stockholm, and the Riksdagshuset, the imposing house of Parliament and the State Bank.

Day 5
Breakfast at the hotel. Continuation of the tour of Stockholm: Walk along the canals to the Stadshuset (City Hall), overlooking Lake Mälaren and symbol of the city, with its particularly national romantic style inspired by that of the Jugendstil and embellished by important artists. Continuation across natural paths and bridges, among the splendid views, to Skeppsholmen, where historic ships are docked and the historical shipyards host cultural institutes and museums with forms that contrast with the avant-garde lines of the Moderna Museet, which is extraordinary for its functional characteristics and works of art.

Day 6
Breakfast at the hotel. Morning at your disposal for individual visits, shopping or leisure time.
During the afternoon, transfer by private coach to the airport and departure for Italy by scheduled flight.
