Day
1
Late afternoon arrival at GRADO , the isle of gold, historical
beach of Central Europe. Room assignment in a downtown hotel,
dinner, and overnight in the hotel.
Day 2
Following breakfast, transfer by private coach to AQUILEIA
, the most important archaeological site in northern Italy,
declared a Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. The capital during
the era of Augustus, it is universally know for an incredible
amount of marvellous mosaics. Excavations in almost any area
brought to light evident of ancient opulence, with patrician
homes, spas, and pools. A whole-day visit with lunch time
free. Return to Grado during the evening, dinner, and overnight
in the hotel.
Day 3
Breakfast at the hotel. The morning dedicated to visiting
GRADO, picturesque and suggestive for the magic of its lagoon
and its maze of Venetian-style calli and campielli amidst
squares and traditional fishermen's dwellings. Many historical
monuments, like the Basilica of Sant'Eufemia (5th century),
and the Basilica of Santa Maria (middle of the 5th century),
have been magnificently restored.
A boat excursion in the Lagoon between Grado and Marano, the
most charming in the Adriatic, between the mouth of the Isonzo
and the Anfora Canal, to experience a unique ecosystem, among
the cane thickets and small islands dotted with the characteristic
straw " casoni " of the fishermen.
Transfer by private coach to DUINO, where the sea and the
Carso join to give life to a stretch of coastline that is
unique for its majesty and natural wonders. Visit to the Castle,
a splendid aristocratic residence of the 14th century with
luxurious furnishings and dramatic views white rock cliffs
overlooking the sea.
Day 4
Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer by private coach to STRASSOLDO,
an enchanting medieval village, and visit to two unique castle
residences: the Castello di Sopra (Upper Castle) (1322) e
the Castello di Sotto (Lower Castle) (1366), famous for the
stupendous garden, while a medieval bridge leads to the chapel
known as the Chiesetta di Santa Maria in Vineis, the oldest
in eastern Friuli, decorated with priceless frescoes by Vitale
of Bologna and Masolino of Panicate and a precious stone stoup
(1507).
Continue on to PALMANOVA , a national monument and UNESCO
Heritage of Humanity. Visit of the city, which is a unique
and integral example of a city-fort as well as an ideal Renaissance
city (1593-1682), in the shape of a nine-pointed star with
a complex system of roadways designed by G. Savorgnan and
by engineers of the Venice Fortification Office to ward off
the threat of a Turkish invasion. Return to Grado.
Day 5
Breakfast at the hotel. Departure in private coach for SESTO
AL REGHENA, site of the fortified Benedictine Abbey of Santa
Maria in Sylvis, one of the oldest in Friuli and today the
most interesting monastic complex founded by the Lombards
in Friuli (762). Then on to PORDENONE, a brief stroll along
the historic Contrada Maggiore, with arched porticos and splendid
Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture, with painted
façades and terra cotta sculptures and decorations.
Finally, a visit to the Duomo (1278) with its wonderful Gothic
details. During the afternoon, departure by private coach
and arrival planned during the evening.
